| This work (in D major) for a traditional string quartet is in the form of a theme and variations. The theme is based on a very old English folk song 'The Old Woman and the Pedlar'. The first time, the theme is thrown between all 4 instruments. Variation 1 uses repeated semi-quaver patterns, Var.2 weaves semiquavers around the tune, Var.3 slows down and modulates into D minor, Var.4 returns to a vivacious D major finale. | |
