The flute is a sweet, pure-toned wind instrument. | ||||||||||
| Introduction |
Despite the fact that the modern flute is usually made of metal, it is considered the high-pitched member of the woodwind family. It is a hollow cylindrical tube, closed at one end, with holes and keys along it. The player blows a stream of air against a sharp edge from the side, but near the closed end of the tube. Early transverse (or side-blown) flutes date back to the 12th century. Other flutes, such as the recorder, are blown from the end. It has a range of 3 octaves, starting at middle C.
