Fragments and Tunes.
Fragments are variously called themes, motifs, idées, figures, leitmotivs, and in jazz/pop - riffs. Musical Discovery lets you build a composition from them.
Introduction Musical Discovery uses the term 'tune' for any piece of music stored in its database, and playable through your MIDI system. Some tunes are simple melodies on a single instrument, on a single track.  Others are complete movements from symphonies, overtures, chamber works or concertos. These involve many tracks, usually one for each part in the score, corresponding to each instrument in the orchestra. You can load a tune from the database using the File option on the main menu at the top of the screen.

The composing tools provide 6 different ways of creating fragments, for later assembly into a finished composition.  Musical Discovery uses the term fragment for a section of a tune. It may consist of only a few bars, perhaps just a single track, possibly several tracks.

One way to create fragments is to extract them and adapt them from existing tunes. The screen entitled Make Bulk Changes to Musical Discovery tunes  makes this task easy. It allows selected tracks and bars to be extracted, the notes can be moved horizontally a specified number of beats or bars,  or they can be moved up or down to create musical sequences.  This screen also provides transposition into a new key signature, by specifying the number of semi-tones by which to move, up or down.  It also permits instruments, volumes , tracks, MIDI channels or note durations to be changed in bulk.
