Musicology.

In the dictionary, musicology is defined as the 'scholarly study of music', but with Musical Discovery it is great fun as well!

Introduction
Musical Discovery has connected the actual sounds of music to the texts.

  • You can read about Beethoven whilst clicking on links to listen to themes, extracts or full works composed by him.
  • You can study the renaissance period of music, whilst listening to music written in that period.
  • You can learn about a string quartet, whilst listening to movements from string quartets by the great masters.
  • You can see photos and movies of a trombone player, and read all about the trombone, whilst listening to music written for the trombone.
  • You can read about the structure of the symphony, whilst listening to symphonies.
  • There is a map of Europe. You can click on any country to bring up a screen with information about that country and its significance in the world of music, whilst listening to music from that country. Of course, there are screens for musical countries outside Europe as well!
  • There is a historical time-line. You can line up the life spans of the great composers against world events, or against significant historical events in North & South America,   Australia & New Zealand,  or the Kings and Queens of England. Clicking on any composer brings up the composer biography, and allows you to listen to his music.

Musical Discovery employs the MIDI system to play music.  MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface.   The music is stored in a database, catalogued by composer, category, ensemble, solo instrument, style/period, and country. The sounds are generated by the sound card in your computer, or by an external sound module connected to your computer.  The quality of the sound will depend on the quality of your sound card or module, and on the quality of your amplification and speaker setup. Musical Discovery does not incorporate live digital recordings, such as those on a CD.
